Silicone vs Wire Reinforced Rubber
Traditional wire reinforced rubber hose did not work for our application. Our situation was a little frustrating; we had to replace the exhaust elbow on our Fischer Panda genset. The installation requires a short segment of hose between the exhaust elbow and an 90 degree fitting (an elbow) where the exhaust exists the case, enclosure, capsule...I forget what Fischer Panda actually calls it.
The frustration came in the fact that the 90 degree fitting required a 1.5 inch internal diameter hose and the 1.5 inch ID hose I had fit perfectly on that fitting. But the nipple on the end of the exhaust elbow above it was too big for 1.5 inch ID hose...I'm sure there was probably a way to press that reinforced hose onto that fitting if you had the right tools but there was absolutely no way I was going to get it on by hand. I actually removed the elbow and tried to push the hose on using all my strength and weight from directly above and still couldn't get it on. And even if I had found a way to force that hose on, given what the old hose looked like I don't think that was a smart way to go...note the split in the hose in the attached photo. Why Panda did this, I have no idea.
A marine diesel mechanic told me HDI Marine makes an after market stainless steel exhaust elbow for this genset that is properly sized and he has also seen people take the OEM part to a machine shop and have it machined to the proper size. My solution was to purchase this hose. While it was expensive compared to traditional wire reinforced rubber hose, is was cheaper and faster than the other two solutions. This hose is far more flexible than its rubber counterpart and I had no issue getting it on the exhaust elbow without the risk that it will split like my old hose did.
