Nov 10, 2024 — When you combine a new-to-you sailboat, a bold 1,300-nautical-mile journey, and the unpredictable Caribbean Sea, you get an unforgettable adventure. In this video, Travis and Stephanie took us along on their epic shakedown sail aboard Jibsea II. From exhilarating winds to unexpected breakdowns, this was a true trial by water for their freshly purchased vessel.

The Calm Before the Challenges

Day six of the voyage started on a high note: picture-perfect lake-like conditions, three sails flying, and speeds that would make any sailor grin. It was a moment of pure sailing bliss. They even hoisted the Code Zero, their large asymmetrical sail, testing out its light wind capabilities.

To top it off, with steady seas, they managed to whip up a feast using their air fryer—because nothing says at sea luxury like crispy fries and chicken fingers.

But smooth sailing rarely lasts forever.

Engine Trouble in the Middle of Nowhere

As the wind died and motoring became necessary, the honeymoon phase with Jibsea II hit a snag. An unsettling sound led Travis to discover a badly chewed-up alternator belt. The engine room quickly turned into a sauna as they diagnosed the issue: a misaligned alternator caused by an improperly installed bolt.

Using ingenuity (and what tools they had on hand), Travis rigged the alternator into better alignment, crossing fingers the fix would hold. The problem highlighted a key lesson for boaters: knowing every nut and bolt on your boat can make the difference between patching things up or being stranded.

A Balancing Act: Speed vs. Repairs

With hundreds of miles to go, minimal wind in the forecast, and a belt on borrowed time, every decision became critical. They alternated between motoring and sailing, keeping a wary eye on the weather and their alternator's dust trail.

The duo pushed on, rounding Cuba and entering the busy shipping lanes of the Gulf Stream. Between dodging tankers and battling fatigue, the journey became a test of endurance and resourcefulness.

Land Ho! Fort Lauderdale Arrival

After days of sweat, worry, and adjustments, the sight of Fort Lauderdale’s skyline brought immense relief. Calm waters greeted them at the inlet, and they navigated smoothly to anchor—exhausted but triumphant.

Reflecting on the journey, Travis and Stephanie marveled at how much they’d learned about Jibsea II in such a short time. Despite the risks of such a bold shakedown sail, the trip reaffirmed their trust in the boat and their own problem-solving skills.

Lessons Learned

  • Be Prepared, But Expect the Unexpected: No amount of pre-departure checks can prepare you for every issue. Adaptability is key.
  • Know Your Boat Inside Out: Familiarity with the boat’s systems and components saved the day—repeatedly.
  • Teamwork Matters: Whether it was hoisting sails or troubleshooting the engine, Travis and Stephanie proved the value of working together under pressure.

What’s Next for Jibsea II?

The adventure doesn’t stop here. With Jibsea II safely anchored, the couple plans to tackle upgrades and equip her for off-grid living. But first, they’ll need to solve their dinghy dilemma—a story for the next episode!

This voyage wasn’t just a shakedown; it was a testament to the unpredictable, challenging, and rewarding life of liveaboard sailors. Jibsea II has proven her mettle—and so have her crew.
