Harken winch pawls and pins do the job
I bought a 1997 IP 350 3 years ago and have been living with cranky winches which have probably not been serviced since 1997. I finally had some time this winter so I took them all apart for cleaning, greasing and oiling. It is not a very hard job at all. Cleaning is very important as I found out that the winch grease dries over time and actually becomes gummy, just the opposite of what grease is supposed to do. What is nice is that all the winches - I have 20, 32, 40 sizes - all use the same pawls and pins. Depending on the size either 2 or 4 pawls are needed, so you can go through a fair number of these $5 critters. However, since I was going through the trouble of taking the winches all apart I replaced the pawls and pins whether they really needed to be replaced or not. I oiled the pawls and greased all the gears. The winches all run silky smooth and turn easily just by stroking the barrel. I am looking forward to much smoother sailing this spring!
