Description

Increase your situational awareness and confidence on the water with the Garmin AIS 800 transceiver. It has 5W of transmit power and provides faster position reporting than ever before. It transmits your vessel information to other AIS receivers in your area while it receives their AIS target data. Garmin AIS 800 has an internal VHF antenna splitter, which allows the VHF and AIS to share a single antenna. It includes a built-in GPS (with connector for optional external antenna) and integrates seamlessly into the Garmin onboard system. The transceiver features NMEA 2000/0183 connectivity for easy integration with compatible chartplotters and multifunction displays. And it's all packed into an easy-to-install black box unit with a small footprint.

Reviews

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Class B+ AIS Transceiver My Garmin AIS 800 was built in Germany. It is a B+ unit that transmits at 5 Watts (older B units transmit at 2 Watts.) and has a 10 nm range. Unlike the older B units, B+ units have a guaranteed time to transmit. How often they transmit depends on the speed of the boat they are transmitting from. Defender will program your MMSI number into the unit, but you can download software directly from Garmin that will let you do this yourself and enter other information about your boat as well. The 800 comes with a USB cable that lets you plug your laptop into the unit to run diagnostics. It also has an array of LED's that tell you what it's doing. In the pictures I shared, the green light means it is powered up and transmitting. The green and yellow lights mean it's powered up, but is not transmitting. When I first began testing my 800, it only powered up when on the NMEA 2000 network when the MFD powered up. I called Garmin and a tech explained the yellow wire in the NMEA 0183 wire bundle had to be connected to the 12 volt ground bus. Once I did that, the 800 worked independently of the NMEA 2000 network. The green wire has to be connected to a switch in order to turn the AIS transmitter off and put the unit in silent mode. I am using an optional GPS antenna, but the 800 has an internal antenna and can get GPS coordinates from the MFD on the NMEA 2000 network, Garmin tech support is excellent as is their wiring diagram. I've been using Garmin, wind, hydraulic autopilot, and MFD instruments since 2017. Every Garmin device is supported with software updates through their Active Captain app several times a year. The stuff is reliable. It also integrates with my Icom M605 radio.
