Description
Tohatsu has taken the 15 HP model and made it better by introducing the MFS15hp Electronic Fuel Injection (EFI) which is the lightest 4-stroke battery-less EFI 15hp model in the industry. You can enjoy added features such as a higher power-to-weight ratio, which is the most important factor for small horsepower outboards. They also succeeded in drastically reducing sound level and vibration on the new 15hp EFI outboard. One major advantage of the EFI system is a quick startup with no choke needed and provides crisp acceleration throughout all RPM ranges as well as a significantly increased fuel efficiency at wide open throttle. Meh. Pretty Disappointed
I bought this 15hp Tohatsu about a 16 months ago along with a 9' Zodiac Cadet RIB. Fifteen horse was the max for the Cadet. My expectation was that the Tohatsu should be able to put the Cadet on a plane with three adults. Fail! It struggles with two adults and a 50 lb dog, even after the installation of foils on the outboard. The Tohatsu just doesn't feel like it's putting out 15 hp: it's more like 10.
Further, it takes a minimum of 2 pulls to start the thing. It often takes three pulls. I chose the Tohatsu for its fuel injection because carburetors so often get gummed up, but I've never had a carbureted outboard that's in good condition take more than one partial pull. Apparently, the fuel injection takes a few pulls to pressurize or something. Very annoying.

Defender’s customer service was great. I had some questions about the motor, shipping, etc, they answer their phones and are very helpful. The motor arrived when expected, no damage, and it is running great. I’m very happy with this motor, I upgraded from a 9.8 hp to a 15 and glad I did, little price difference, much faster, and has EFI.
