Poor Performance and Low Quality Hardware
I have been a decades long customer of Defender and I have generally been pleased with the products they sell and the service they provided. And I'm not usually one to write negative reviews about products, but my AB inflatable has been such a disappointment I felt like I should warn others of what I experienced after spending $30+k on one of AB's RIBs. I bought a VST 15 in 2018 and was initially very disappointed by how the boat handled. No mater how I trimmed the outboard, the boat porpoised badly. Defender referred me to a representative from AB who kept asking me for more photographs of how the motor was mounted. After about 4 exchanges with that person he had no advice and nothing was done to resolve the problem. At the start of my second frustrating season with the boat I tried a Sport SE 300 hydrofoil which provided no improvement. During my third season someone, from Defender recommended that I try a pair of Nauticus trim tabs. They have worked wonders on the boat and have finally resolved my porpoising issue.
Now that I've used the boat for six summers I've seen how poorly the hardware and seating has held up. In the attached pictures you will see that the stainless steel hardware has rusted, hinges on the seat back of the center console have failed, the fabric covering the seats has cracked as has the fiberglass under the helm seat. And this is a boat used 4 months per year (June - Sept) and that is stored in a heated barn over the winter. Not Impressed!
